A kicker can be an unexpected twist in a storyline, the lucky card that wins the poker round, or the specialty player who can change the fate of an American Football game.
Yep, that's us. We have the ability to re-shape an entire process and twist the way technology empowers people. So it should come as no surprise that our innovations are intuitively designed with an added kick.
We're a Design Consultancy made up of Designers, Researchers, Innovators and Makers. We create meaningful, lasting relationships to products by creating interfaces that feel as natural as a conversation. We work with emerging technologies, like touch, haptics and gesture, to design natural and intuitive ways for users to access the power of today’s digital devices in their daily lives.
It is with this expertise that we help inventors, product managers, technologists, manufacturers, and designers create screen and physical interfaces for mobile devices, consumer electronics, appliances, installations and robots.
Whether it’s a smarter conference call phone or a tastier cup of tea, it all begins with a series of questions that leads to our core goal as designers: How can design and technology change a person's experience in the real world? Our answer: Re-innovation.

Our solutions are designed to revolve around people, not technology. We focus on the steps people take to complete a task, and make our products enable those steps. Rather than asking what steps the technology requires to operate, and then making the user perform them. Think of this as a game of follow the leader where we make up rules based on the user’s needs.
A lot of our time is spent distilling technology into possibility, so it doesn’t feel like rocket science when a user tries to do something as simple as search the web or command a camera. Our solutions are never about the technology. Instead, we use it as a material that gives our products a kick.
We draw our inspiration from real life situations to inform how products should work in human hands. We ask about the whats, wheres, hows, and whys. Yes, we love questions. And lots of them. But it’s all for a good reason. Questions lead to taking a closer look at things from all angles. This way we find problems to solve, as well as identify what works and can be built upon.
By being astute observers, we see what people are trying to do and the challenges they face in accomplishing tasks. We look at work arounds users develop to try to bridge the gaps between existing tools and their needs. We use these as opportunities for innovation. We also pay attention to the types of sensory cues that make most sense given the environmental factors and context of use. We use that information to create new products that help users achieve their goals in a way that feels natural, because they require minimal additional focus to operate.
Through this process we have a better understanding of what’s the right solution. Reframing the question through an emerging technology lens leads us to invention or re-innovation. Not a duct-tape-fix to mask the problem.
That’s how we’re able to design products with kick.

Dan Saffer: The Want Interview "We traveled to SF’s South Park neighborhood to interview him in Kicker Studio’s echo-rich, dog-friendly loft offices. It was late on a Friday, he’d had a crazy week and casually nursed a glass of Bourbon as we talked about UX, robotics, magazines on tablets, and how good usability should help us forget that computers are everywhere."
