You've cut me to the core as I'm one of those people who say "We need to be more innovative."

That said, you've it a powerful insight in that maybe innovation doesn't exist at all, except as a description of something else.

Great post, but good luck getting business people to stop using buzzwords. :) I find a lot of business writing hard to stomach.

Misuse/overuse of usability terms gets on my nerves all the time. Sadly, "We need breakthrough usability!" doesn't sound unfamiliar.

Have to say, made me laugh. We're just finishing up a Grad project for the new "Innovation Center" at school. Anything with that name on it just runs like wild fire. People get so excited, and have to stop because, "what does it mean, anyway?"

I've heard it... over and over, and I can't agree with you more. Innovation is the result of passionate, hard workers. Not a module you buy or a team you bill for.

I kind of touched on this back in November on my blog.

"Innovation is a given when you’re working with passionate experts, and what idiot hires anyone but an expert. Clearly no one is paying for innovation, it’s just a way to tell an expert to share what they’re passionate about." http://tinyurl.com/dfypou
