I gave a talk at my publisher’s conference Voices That Matter: Web Design Conference yesterday on how to design better applications by using behavior to make them smarter and more clever. Although the examples in this presentation are web, the presentation works fine (and possibly even better) for desktop and device applications.

It’s a common business strategy to integrate a physical product with a service. In many ways, it’s been that way for over a century, but with an even tighter possible integration now that the service can transform the way the physical product works (via firmware updates, new service agreements, applications, games, content, etc.) There seems to be a few common business strategies for these product-service combinations.

I read with some interest Carla Diana’s Core77 report on this year’s CHI conference. (It’s always better to get a summary of CHi than to actually go.) Buried in the article is this line: “Industrial design is the new interface design” was the mantra of the week.

Conference phones suck. That’s what nearly everyone told us when we started talking to them about how they used their phones—often specially-designed, very expensive phones—for conference calls. We knew this, of course, since we’ve used and disliked them before ourselves (and probably you have too). That’s why we decided to design a new VOIP conference phone for small businesses.
