I love this essay and believe that designs for the differently-abled and disabled, sort of like research for space launches and exploration, always wind up benefiting the "rest of us."

Good work. Also, way to go in loving your dad.

Awesome ideas. This would also be great for the millions of people with arthritis. All of this technology already exists today, and phones (landline phones) have barely moved on since the 60's. Why is this not on the market now? Millions of able bodied people would buy this too. I mean when was the last time you heard someone complain that their phone was too easy to use? Excellent work. I really hope this makes it to market.

This is spot on. My mom suffered from MS and went through these exact issues. This kind of device would have made her life easier.

My grandmother and a few others in my life have MS, and I have always wished technology would have come along a little faster to help make her life easier. I would think the assisted living facility where she lives would have all kinds of use for something like this for their residents. It could help residents and caretakers stay in touch much better than the call button system they use now, which requires someone visit the room, whether or not it's necessary.
I've also wished that there were an audio e-book reader that she could easily operate. She was an avid reader but can't see well enough to read anymore, so she just relies on the TV for entertainment, but dearly misses reading.

This is a great idea - having a differently abled parent myself, who can't remember phone numbers has trouble dialing, and has limited use in only one hand/arm, I see that this could really help her to be more abled. I especially like the idea of letting the user know that time of day.

i love the little "sleep" icon mode when people are unavailable, or it's too late to call them. it's like: dad, gentle reminder, it's still too early/late to call (^_+)

A fantastic idea that could work for more than your dad. There are others with similar needs brought on by developmental disabilities or other physical challenges.

As with most designs geared towards those with different abilities, a device such as this could end up bringing usability to the masses as well.

I am currently developing a touch screen/audio device for communication and would welcome the chance to share ideas.
