Yes, I concur, Verganti is very strong on "what" radical innovation on meaning means to business, less so on the "how", which can be multi-faceted.

In our own practice, our ability to study culture, and how people construct cultural meaning, and not just people and what they do makes all the difference!

I have been reading verganti's book. I think that what he is talking about is finding the mix between tech, business model and design if you want to scale fast and not be incremental.

Where the designer can have impact is when there is a radical technology sitting in the room but no one knows what to do with it or how people might use it.

Some of the "interpreters" can be users, he says, but not ordinary users. He thinks designers can gain insight and inspiration to improve the product as it means currently, not to break out of that existing meaning.

I find it interesting that he suggests focusing on, as you say, "what could be: possible new futures." Isn't this also the goal of human-centered design? Does he not think that designers can both gain insight and inspiration from people while also designing for what could be?
