While doing some research, I accidentally stumbled onto the Wikipedia entry for Gesture Recognition, an entry that, amazingly, I’d never seen before, despite days and days of research for Designing Gestural Interfaces. Buried in the entry is a great name for a condition that poorly-designed gestural interfaces can cause: gorilla arm.

In 1994, telecommunications giant AT&T ran a series of television ads in the US created by N W Ayer and directed by David Fincher (!) with the tagline “You Will.” While designers fetishize the Apple 1984 ad, I think we should also remember this series as a lost set of classics.

Ghost Fingers was an emerging pattern I put in my new book Designing Gestural Interfaces, in Chapter 3: Touchscreen Patterns. Ghost Fingers is when a device becomes seemingly transparent so the users can “see” (onscreen) their fingers on the back of or inside of the device. Since it was a new pattern, I had a bit of trouble finding examples for it. But recently, two great example products have appeared.

With the launch of HP’s TouchSmart and TX2 computers, I’m occasionally asked what a purely touchscreen system would be like for a desktop. (It’s rumored that Jeff Han of Perceptive Pixel is currently working on one, and of course, the iPhone, Instinct, Dare, et al have touchscreen OSes for mobile.) With the publication of my book Designing Gestural Interfaces last week, I thought I would discuss what some desktop concepts could be like.

As someone who is a supporter of touchscreen technology and its uses (and voting machines would fall into the excellent use category, if done properly), the problems with touchscreen voting machines are cringeworthy. Basic, basic errors that could have, should have been detected months and months ago. Errors both from a technical and a usability standpoint.

Instead of only being able to either Tap to Select/Activate or Slide to Move, now you can combine them. With these touchscreens you can Click and Move, effectively adding (at least) one new interaction design paradigm to work with.
